Festival Chorus Newsletter
March 2013
Our spring concert is almost here – and it promises to be both interesting, unusual and beautiful. The music is certainly beautiful, as the choir will attest after twelve weeks of rehearsal; interesting, because we are juxtaposing a19th century French composer, Vierne, with two of the giants of the early 20th century, Kodaly and Janacek, both from Eastern Europe. The unusual element might be that the Vierne Messe Solonnelle is not very well known – though it should be.
We are combining this mass with Janacek’s Otcenas – his setting of the Lord’s Prayer. Composed in 1906, it is very simple, reflecting the atmosphere of an Eastern Orthodox chant rather than the folk music which was so often used in his compositions. Then there is the Missa Brevis by Kodaly. This was composed during World War II at the time Nazi forces were occupying Budapest, and Kodaly was himself hiding in a convent cellar. Again, like the Janacek, it is very approachable and provides a wonderful choral experience both for the choir and the audience. We hope you will join us on the 23rd.
Our next concert will be a celebration of Baroque music; a musical feast for the summer
