June 2013

Our summer season is well under way and following Radio 3’s Baroque Spring, we are rehearsing for a Baroque Summer. Two of the composers will be well known to our audience – Scarlatti and Vivaldi – though even in these cases we have chosen pieces that may not be as obvious as others. Perhaps, less well known is Antonio Bononcini (1677-1726). We will be performing his Stabat Mater. Antonio came from a very musical family. Both his father, Giovanni Maria Bononcini, and his elder brother, Giovanni Battista, were musicians and also composers. Indeed, Giovanni Battista spent a number of years in London at the same time as Handel. Here his popularity rivalled that of Handel and this apparently inspired the epigram “Tweedledum and Tweedledee” describing the competition between them and their fans. Antonio, a cellist as was his older brother, might not have achieved quite such starry heights but his career was not negligible – he was Kappellmeister to the future Holy Roman Emperor, Charles VI before becoming maestro di cappella in Modena (1721), a post he held until his death.
The Stabat Mater, describing Mary’s grief at the foot of the Cross, is going to be set off by the lively, dramatic Dixit Dominus by Scarlatti and Vivaldi’s setting of the Magnificat – Mary’s own song. All were contemporaries, and though Scarlatti’s career saw him mainly in Italy and finally Spain, Bononcini and Vivaldi moved in similar circles – Venice, Vienna; perhaps their paths crossed.
I do hope you will join us to enjoy their music.
