Easter News Letter, future dates and events

Easter will arrive late this year but our concert is just over two weeks away. The music we will be performing is particularly appropriate; The Via Crucis by Liszt following the Stations of the Cross – the journey taken by Christ to his crucifixion – is obvious. We combine this with two Bach Cantatas, both composed for the season, in particular Cantata 182 which was written for Palm Sunday, the Sunday that celebrates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The words emphasise this, proclaiming “King of Heaven, welcome/Let us also be your Zion/Come within/You have taken our hearts from us” in the opening chorus, while the final chorus closes on a positive note – “Let us go in the Salem of joy/accompany the king in love and in sorrows,/He goes before,/And opens the way”

The three Bruckner Motets which complete the programme are also appropriate for the season. Though the hymn “Pange lingua gloriosi corporis mysterium”, the words by St Thomas Aquinas, was originally written for the feast of Corpus Christi, it has come to be associated with Maundy Thursday through its sacramental theme. “Tell tongue the mystery of the glorious Body and of the precious Blood” – the opening lines set the mood. In “Christus factus est” – Christ was made for us/obedient unto death – the words look to the actual crucifixion but have a triumphal tone rather than sacrificial – Wherefore God also hath exalted him and given him a name above all others. These words would be sung as the Gradual – a response sung or recited between the Epistle and Gospel in the Mass. – and would have been used both on Passion Sunday and also on Maundy Thursday. The third Motet the Choir will perform is also triumphant in its tone; Vexilla regis – The banners of the King go forth. The words are by Venatius Fortunatus, Bishop of Poitiers, and were first performed in 569AD to celebrate the arrival of a relic of the True Cross at the monastery of Saint-Croix in Poitiers. It then became the usual processional sung on Good Friday, but the hymn is now used in services during Holy Week – the week leading up to Easter Sunday.

Reflective, celebratory, unaccompanied or against the sonorities of the organ, this concert, unified in theme, presents a wonderfully varied programme. We look forward to welcoming you on the day.
