What were they playing?

Last night we were lucky enough to have a generous sponsor who paid for the cost of having age specific instruments for our performance of Monteverdi Vespers. We watched as the players removed the most extraordinary instruments from their cases. Cornetts with curves and snake shapes, huge elongated Sackbutts, violin shaped but not violins and best of all the huge Theorbo. We were especially lucky that David Miller, the world renown Theorbo player agreed to play for us. So not only did most of us hear the Theorbo for the first time, but we heard it played by the best! It was especially beautiful when it accompanied the soloists . I don’t know why it has been removed from the modern orchestra? Well yes I do – it is huge!!
