New Term Welcome

Our new term has begun and already we are well into rehearsals for our Autumn concert when we celebrate our 40th anniversary. The choir has certainly grown from its modest beginnings . Now we look forward to an exciting programme which will include our commission by Colin Matthews, Voices of the Air, a song cycle, in which the composer has set texts by Edward Thomas, Emily Dickinson, Rabindrath Tagore, Katherine Mansfield and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. We will also be performing Spem in alium (Tallis). This extrardinary and inspirational work appears to have been Tallis response to a dare. In 1567 the Italian composer Alessandro Striggio was in London on a diplomatic mission to the court. During his visit it is thought he presented his 40-voice motet Ecce beatam lucem. It seems that theThomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk, a great music lover, then asked “whether none of our Englishmen could sett as good a songe” as that which had been sent into England by the Italians. Tallis response was to compose Spem in alium ( I have never put my hope in any other than you, O God) – a text used for Matins. It may then have been performed at Nonsuch Palace which had an octagonal banqueting hall with four balconies – ideally suited to Tallis’ composition. However, the earliest surviving manuscripts date from 1610, prepared for the investiture of Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales.
