A word from Andrea after the concert

To the excellent Festival Chorus,

Congratulations on a magnificent 40th anniversary concert! It was an honour to stand in front of you all on Saturday night. I know that you have all worked extremely hard on the music this term and that was evident in your excellent performance of four contrasting pieces spanning some 400 years. We have made such a journey with all the repertoire – particularly the Tallis and Matthews. I think I had the best seat in the house for the Tallis – the performance was breath-taking – moving some of the audience and orchestra to tears. You performed the Matthews with great commitment and musicality – the first, fourth and sixth movements being a highlight for me – and ‘Sing the Song’ was a splendid romp – well done! Colin was very happy with your performance, and all remarked on how well the choir knew this challenging contemporary work. The Handel was simply dazzling, by this time the orchestra were applauding too! And the Poulenc, well there were moments both ravishing and sublime. The Gloria and Laudamus te were wonderfully performed and you responded well to both orchestra and soloist in the final Domine Deus sections. I must say a huge congratulations to the Sinclair Sinfonia, who played so well. They very much enjoyed performing with us – particularly the Tallis around the church – and they played the Matthews with great commitment and sensitivity. Our soloist Katy Hill sang all the repertoire beautifully – deft and elfin in the Matthews, elegantly shaped in the Poulenc and soaring above us all in the Tallis – it was a joy to work with such an outstanding singer and musician.

Thanks must go to the committee who did all the planning, concert management – including my two podiums!, party arranging and pesky light manoeuvring. And finally to Elspeth Wyllie, who not only accompanied all of our rehearsals, but added much musical input to the rehearsal process, conducted some rehearsals and sang with us too on the night – huge thanks and congratulations.

The concert and party was a fitting celebration of all you’ve achieved over the years. It’s been an honour to work with you over these last two years – here’s to forty more!

with warm wishes,
